IT@Cornell depends on strong working partnerships between the Office of the Vice President of IT, central IT, campus IT, and the Cornell community to ensure that Cornell's information technology environment is the best it can be. Staff participate on numerous campuswide committees concerned with IT architecture, administrative systems development, and many other
IT topics.

The goal of IT governance at Cornell is to:

  • Provide a central and fully transparent resource to evaluate and approve projects. See the IT Roadmap for approved projects.
  • Establish a system to limit project redundancies
  • Foster IT collaboration across Units and between Units and CIT
  • Ensure alignment with the overall direction of the University

The IT Governance Committee (ITGC)

The IT Governing Council (ITGC) is made up of the Provost, Vice President and CFO, Dean of Computing and Information Science, and the CIO. Its role is to make strategic IT decisions, establish IT priorities for Cornell, approve campus-wide IT staffing and the annual IT budget, and drive accountability for the effective implementation of the IT operating plan and budget.

Sub-Committees

The new IT governance structure incorporates three planned ITGC sub-committees, whose roles are to prioritize and approve projects and strategic plans in three respective IT domains: administrative, academic, and IT campus services:

  • Administrative Computing (ACAC)
This committee provides institutional level advice about administrative systems to the Executive Vice President and Vice President for Information Technologies, including, but not limited to, advice about priorities for major investments in new university wide information systems.
  • Learning Technologies (academic)
This committee works in direct support of the Deans, Vice Provost, CIO and ITGC to provide forward-looking strategic guidance in the use of learning technologies at Cornell.
  • IT Campus Services (sub-committee TBD)

Other Advisory Groups

At present, the following advisory groups also help set strategic directions for information technology at Cornell:

Faculty Advisory Board on Information Technologies (FABIT) - Includes faculty members from every Cornell college and school.

Information Technology Managers Council (ITMC) - The ITMC is a forum where CIT and the colleges and divisions better understand each other's perspectives and work together to meet the university's technological needs. The ultimate goal is to maximize the University's investment in IT staffing and related resources. It includes one representative from each major college, administrative unit, and CIT area with university-wide scope.
